Raoul Nordling
The Swedish Consul General to Paris was Raoul Nordling.
In the closing days of German control over Paris, he
was instrumental in saving lives of political prisoners
about to be moved eastwards during the general evacuation.
Later he was to arrange a cease-fire between the Resistance,
and the German occupiers of Paris.
In order to avoid destroying Paris,
General von Choltitz - Commandant of Gross Paris -
asked Nordling to lead a mission through German
lines to ask the Allies to come quickly.
Suffering a heart attack just before his departure, there
was only
other person who could go in his stead.
This was because the name written by von Choltitz on the
laissez-passer was ``R. Nordling.''
Thus the mission was actually carried out by Raoul's brother: Rolf Nordling.
Jean Dutertre has identified the man
in the background of the image above as
physicien-general Pierre Richet (bow tie, dark glasses).
Pierre Richet was the chief physicien of the 2nd
Armoured Division of Leclerc during the Second World War.
