French Fried: The Culinary Capers of an American in Paris, by Harriet Welty Rochefort, 2001. Harriet continues her attempts to demystify the French with French Fried, the saucy-sometimes spicy - and often hilarious tale of one American woman's 30-year foray into the byzantine world of French cuisine. And when it comes to food, Rochefort's experiences are anything but dull or traditional. When she first arrives in France, she dines on onion soup with her concierge. When she finally gets a decent apartment with a kitchen it turns out that there's both a shower - and a cop - in it. Buy it!

Sheep at Restaurant

jmack@pipeline.com

I walked a lot in Paris. In fact, one day I walked all the way out to the belt road (what's it called?) where things got a little desolate. But, most of the time I stayed within the inner city where I found many unusual sights, but none more so than this restaurant with the sheep and/or goat lounging in what appears to be the entrance way. I suppose they had a culinary purpose for being there, like supplying milk for cheese or something like that. Anyway, here was something you wouldn't see back home, so I took the photo.

The belt road is called "boulevard des Marechaux" because all avenues are names with famous marshals ("marechal" in French, plural "marechaux") of empire (Napoleon's ones). If the belt road is the highway, it's simply the "peripherique." But I think you probably mean that you were walking outbound to the "boulevards des Marechaux".

Thanks to Jean-Manuel

Can you help me identify some of the unknowns here?

  1. Where is this restaurant? Is it still there?
It is still there. It sounds like the owner has changed since the picture has been taken.

    La Ferme de la Villette 180, avenue Jean Jaures 75019 Paris tel: +33 (1) 42 41 71 35 +33 (1) 42 41 27 96 +33 (1) 42 41 85 62

    Thanks to Jean-Manuel

  2. Are the sheep still there?
No. There is no sheep anymore for 3 or 4 years. There was a dog too.

    Thanks to Jean-Manuel

  3. What are the sheep doing there?
    Just for fun... [?!]

    Thanks to Jean-Manuel
