"Amities" (the French equivalent of "best wishes") is the
only message on this card sent to a Mlle. M.C. in Bourges from
M. E. A., who was in Paris in November 1923. The Place du
Concorde gets its name from the peace after the Revolution
of 1789. A statue of Louis XV was torn from its pedestal in the
Place in 1792, just 17 years after the statue was unveiled.
Since 1833, a 3,000-year-old obelisk from Luxor in Egypt has
caused tourists to pause before venturing to cross to the other
side. The biggest change in the past seven decades is the
amount and speed of the traffic circling the Place.
The Eiffel Tower in the distance was completed in 1889 for
an international exposition marking the centennial of the Fall of
the Bastille. Almost pulled down in 1909, the tower's
survival was assured after it became a terminal for the
first radio telephone service across the Atlantic in 1916.
