A Special Exposition of the Paris Pages:

Monet's waterlily garden looking back towards the Japanese Bridge, May 1992.

Monet in Giverny - Lotte Larsen's Paris - Page 1

Both Monet's home and garden in Giverny are available to tour. Hours: April - October, Tuesday through Sunday: 10 am - 6 pm (closed Mondays). You can choose between touring the home and garden or just the home or just the garden. Be prepared for long waiting lines occasionally.

Claude Monet (1840 - 1926) lived in Giverny from 1883 to the time of his death in 1926, His home, gardens, and surrounding hillsides served as an incredible inspiration for his paintings. Opened as a museum in 1980, a walk around his grounds helps to understand and appreciate the source of that inspiration. The gardens change throughout the seasons, so many people visit at many different times.

Books listed in the Bibliography: Monet & Giverny provide biographical details about his work at Giverny, his favorite foods, and analysis and criticism of his paintings. The bibliography also lists children's books about Monet, Monet videos, and garden design suggestions for those trying to emulate Monet's vision.

In the 1990s, the small village of Giverny has become a booming tourist haven for Monet fans. In June 1992 the American Museum opened several doors away from Monet's home. It contains an excellent collection of American Impressionistic art done in France; Gerdts' book The Impressionist Colony in Giverny in the Bibliography: Monet & Giverny describes the paintings and the time period in detail. Also recently opened as a small museum with garden is the Hotel Baudy where the American impressionists and other visitors to Giverny stayed.

In Paris, Monet's paintings can be seen at Musée d'Orsay, Musée de L'Orangerie, and at the Musée Marmottan. There are no original paintings any longer at his home in Giverny, only reproductions. In the United States, the Art Institute of Chicago has a stunning impressionist collection with many Monets.
