The Map by Braun - 1572

Click on map to zoom. - Version Française
The author Georges Braun published in Cologne in 1572 a work titled Civitates orbis terranum. It is in this work that the map of Paris known as the Plan de Braun (Map by Braun) is found. This map was etched on a copper plate. The finesse and precision of the engraving gives it a documentary as well as an esthetic value which is superior.

The map measures 48 by 33 cm. It has a very exact view of the Paris as it was in the late 1520s. Notably figuring in this map is the large tower of the Louvre which François 1st ordered demolished in 1529. In the upper left of the map a cartouche topped with the coat of arms of Paris encloses inscriptions (Lutetia, vulgari nomine Paris...); in the lower left, three small personnages are dressed in costume of the day.

The Plan de Braun is oriented more or less as nearly all of the old maps of Paris; west at the bottom. This system allows for straight on views of the front of most of the churches.

The field of view of the map is roughly from Le Gibet de Montfaucon, Saint Lazare and the lower part of Montmartre, in the North (ie the left side of the map); Les Cordelières and the rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs in the south; the Bastille in the east, and finally in the west, the Tuileries. Notre Dame is easily found on Ile de la Cité.
